How to Find Midpoints in an Astrology Chart

A midpoint is the middle point between any two planets in a chart. This is another technique where the Degrees of Arc Table can be utilized and if this is a new concept for you then may I suggest that you become familiar with the Degrees of Arc Table. In synastry, which is the comparison between the charts of two people, many astrologers swear by the composite chart which is created using midpoints between the two charts. I find them to be at least as accurate as comparing aspects between two charts. The composite chart is created by taking the two ascendants and each planet from each chart and converting them to degrees of arc so that you can find the the midpoint between the two planets. A new chart is made in this way which represents the relationship as though the two individuals were one.
For instance; to find the midpoint between a Sun in Cancer at
15degree03' and a Sun in Sagittarius at 10degree 2', begin by converting each position to degrees of arc. Then add the two figures together and divide the sum by two. So the math would be shown as follows:
sun in cancer= 105degree 03'
sun in sagittarius= 250degree 24
355degree 27' divided by 2 = 177degree 43' which in turn converts to
27degreevirgo 43'
So the composite Sun would be at 27degree virgo 43'
Note: keep in mind that a sign = 30 degrees, with a degree shown bydegree.
A degree = 60 minutes; minutes shown by; ' when carrying over. If you wanted to combine the cusps of two charts based on an unequal house system, then you would have to calculate each house cusp individually as well, which is a lot of math! I have found that simply creating an equal house chart based on the midpoint between the two ascendants to be accurate, but again; see what you personally prefer.

Some astrologers also like to find and interpret the midpoints between planets in an individual chart. May I recommend a classic book titled The Combination of Stellar Influences by Reinhold Ebertin for a more in depth explanation of using midpoints.

In a nutshell; the midpoint between planets in the natal chart is considered to be a sensitive point that is activated by transits just as a natal planet is. Midpoints is a separate study unto itself. A computer program greatly simplifies the procedure.
