The Fixed Stars

Astrologer/author: Randall Roffe

Ancient astrologers relied heavily on the fixed stars. Having the Sun, Moon and only seven known planets, meant that the fixed stars became another factor that they could use to integrate into their work, when it was difficult to associate the apparent and known planetary configurations with certain events.

This allowed them to explain certain events that had seemed to have nothing astrological to hold accountable for previously. Generally, the interpretations assigned to the fixed stars by the ancients were either very negative and dire or extremely positive and promising. This is because people did not have the same opportunities we enjoy today for controlling their own destiny. The challenges they faced in life seemed beyond hope and control and we can only wonder how many predictions manifested in larger part based on rigid belief systems.

Fixed stars are generally used as a secondary addition to chart readings. Not all astrologers make use of them. Those astrologers who do use them, have found that their influence is stronger when in conjunction aspect to a cusp or one of the planets and using an orb of one degree. View Sample

Some rules for determining and using Fixed Stars:

* Their longitude increases by about 50 seconds each year. This is due to the precession of the equinoxes.

* It takes 72 years for them to move one degree.

To correct the positions for the year of birth, astrologers would subtract or add 50 seconds of a degree to the positions shown in the natal chart for each year of difference between the year of birth and the year for which the positions are listed.

Currently, there are various astrology software programs to figure this out automatically, thereby saving time and reducing errors. A few of the more commonly used fixed stars:
