How Relationship Compatibility Works

Will he be right for me? Is she the one I’m looking for? Are we well suited for a lifetime? What will our relationship be likely to experience further down the road? Will he be faithful? Will she choose to stay? One of the most important areas of life concerns intimacy and have a strong desire to find the right partner. Just like relationships themselves, relationship compatibility can be one of the most fascinating subjects in astrology. Astrologers call this synastry.

Compatibility is much more than just a Zodiac Sun sign match. “A sensual Taurus may get into bed with irresponsible Gemini, but will probably marry practical Virgo” kind of approach may be fun to play around with, but more likely than not, it will quickly prove to be highly inaccurate in real life experience. Which Signs go with which? While there is a certain amount of truth behind a list of Signs which are said to harmonize with one another, Sun Signs tend to paint a person’s portrait with a very broad brush, losing most of the details. Comparing Sun Signs alone never gives you the kind or quantity of juicy information that you really need to know, whether your decision is to jump into bed or enter into a lifelong partnership.

Are you thinking about marriage? Looking to form a business partnership? Are there relationship issues, affairs? Compatibility astrology, synastry, can reveal the driving forces behind what is happening on the surface, and give you a better idea about what you can expect to go on between you and your mate. You can use synastry to see whether and how a relationship is likely to succeed or is destined to fail, and why.

You start with accurate birth charts for both people. The more accurate the birth times, the more accurate the charts. Having done that, there are certain favorable points for us to look for:

Let’s start with the Sun sign and the Ascendant sign for each of you. Your Sun sign is the Zodiac sign your natal Sun is located in. Your Ascendant is your rising Sign, the Sign on the cusp of your first house. Is your partner’s Sun sign the same as your Ascendant sign? Is your Sun sign the same as your partner’s Ascendant? Are they opposite signs? Either are considered favorable. If you they are in the same sign, you will share more similar traits and can understand each other better. If they are in opposition, you will have a great deal of attraction and good rapport. Signs are in opposition when they are 180 degrees away from each other, on opposites sides of your chart.

If your Sun sign is trine your partner’s Sun sign or ascendant sign, you may have harmony, a very easy flow but your relationship could also be boring to you. Signs are trine when they are 120 degrees apart, counting four signs over in either direction on your chart. If your Sun sign is sextile to your partner’s Sun sign or ascendant sign, you should experience an easy affability and attraction to each other. Signs are sextile when they are separated by 60 degrees, two signs over from your Sun sign in either direction on the chart.

If your Sun sign is square your partner’s Sun sign or ascendant sign, you may experience a lot of tension in your relationship. A sign is square to another sign when it has a 90 degree separation, so a sign would be square to your Sun sign if it was the third sign away from yours on your chart.

If your Sun sign or ascendant sign are right next to your partner’s Sun sign or ascendant sign, they are semi-sextile, have nothing in common. There would have to be other positive factors to outweigh the negativity of this influence. If your Sun sign or ascendant sign is quincunx your partner’s Sun sign or ascendant sign, this influence would tend to strain your relationship and you would have to rely on stressed shared traits. A quincunx is when signs are 150 degrees apart, five signs in either direction on your chart from your Sun sign.

Next let’s take a look at the midheaven on both of your charts. Your midheaven points out your goals and objectives. Is your partner’s Sun sign the same as the sign on your midheaven? Is your Sun sign the same as the sign on your partner’s midheaven. Both influences are favorable in helping you align with each other.

We can look at the 7th and 5th houses. Is your Sun sign on the cusp of your partner’s 7th house. The 7th house represents partnership and marriage. Is your partner’s Sun sign on the cusp of your 7th house? Now look to see if your Sun sign is on the cusp of your partner’s 5th house. Your 5th house represents romance. Is your
Partner’s Sun sign on the cusp of your 5th house?

After you have examined the relationships of both your Sun signs, ascendant signs, midheaven and 5th and 7th houses, you should look at your planetary relationships.

For questions of romance, look to activity in the 5th house. (if romance is indicated without marriage, the 5th house planets will be active in the progressions without strong 7th house indicators)

For questions about marriage, look at the 7th house. (there must be aspects involving the 7th house ruler in the progressed chart for marriage to take place. The Sun will normally be active in progressed chart when events like marriage are coming due.

Aspects between the two Moons will show your potential for emotional harmony, how you respond to each other’s habits and moods.
