The Reading Room
These are some of my favorite resources. Having accumulated a sizable reference library of astrology books over the years, most of the books recommended here are those that I have found myself returning to again and again during my own learning phase.
Some of these are classic works and in my opinion, for those who are planning to take up this art in a serious manner, they fall into the indispensable category. When you're ready to take your interest to the next level, by all means invest in an ephemeris. An ephemeris details all the planet's positions and entry times into new signs, lunar phase and sign information, eclipse dates, Moon void of course times and all planetary retrograde periods and more. P.S. Mercury isn't the only planet that backtracks.

Secrets From A Stargazer's Notebook by Debbie Kempton-Smith
It has been observed that high intelligence and a sense of humor are linked. This book proves it. Debbie Kempton-Smith, astrologer and member of Mensa does an amazing job of making you laugh out loud, while at the same time giving you the facts about astrology. Something about that combo makes it stick. She knows her stuff, too. Most importantly, she tells it like it is and that's why it's one of the most dog-eared books in my collection.
Parker's Astrology Every astrologer wants a book that is both graphically appealing and content rich. This is a gorgeous, yet highly informative book you'll enjoy and refer to for years to come. Treat yourself.
