Mercury - The Messenger
Mercury is never more than 28 degrees from the Sun, being either in front of or behind the sun's placement. When an astrologer is determining the manner in which a person's mind functions, they always look first to Mercury in the chart. Mercury provides a channel for the will (Sun) to communicate.
When Mercury is in the same sign as the Sun then, the person speaks his mind. When Mercury is in a sign other than the Sun's natal placement, then you never really know what the person is really thinking, regardless of what they are communicating. (This is not to say that everything they communicate is not true.) For example, these people will often agree to something they have no real agreement with....but you will never know that.
If you were born with Mercury retrograde in your natal chart, then voila! Mercury retrograde can be a good time for you to communicate what you have to say. This doesn't mean that the rest of the world will necessarily "get it" until the planet goes direct again, so write it down and remind them again when conditions are more conducive for the Mercury direct crowd.
When Mercury is touching a planet in your natal chart by way of a transit or progression, ideas flow and there is a short-lived opportunity to transmit ideas, go places, play cerebral games that stretch the mental muscles, read, write and do those things which are in touch with the open and curious part of your brain. The planet it is aspecting will further narrow down the best way to use Mercury's energy.
